Pioneer Park. 40 acres of this 900 acre city park are virgin prairie, and that is where these elk are. So far I've seen more elk in Nebraska, where they were native to the prairie, then I saw in all of Alaska. When we first got ther, they were barely visible, sitting in the grass.The prairie grass is about knee high, and while I was standing at the fence, I got about 10 bug bites. I kept thinking about those pioneer women, trudging through that stuff in those long skirts.
