Check out what the bears have done to these poor trees at our campsite in Banff. They sharpen their claws on the bark. These marks were all "sappy" so they weren't 'day old'. The other critters rub their antlers on the aspen trunks so all of the aspen trees are black and scratched up on the bottom and white (birch like) on the top.
