Chimney Rock, NE June 19, 2006

Not your average Nikes. By the time the pioneers got this far, they had worn out the shoes they had brought, and if they did not have a 2nd pair, they would trade with the Indians for their mocassins. These are decorated with dyed porcupine quills, which the Indians used before they could get beads. The idea of walking the Trail in your barefeet, is truly scary. While there were some incidents where the Indians attacked the pioneers, especially at the end of the emigration, most of the time they traded food for items the pioneers were willing to part with. Posted by Picasa
